Specific Physiotherapy

Clinical Pilates with Purpose

At Specific Physiotherapy, our clinical Pilates classes are run by our physiotherapists rather than the studio forms of Pilates you may have seen images of online. Incorporating both reformer Pilates and mat Pilates, depending on your preferences, clinical Pilates classes are designed with your abilities, needs, and goals in mind.

As clinical Pilates has a focus on you as an individual, your program is tailored to you and your movement. After an assessment from your physiotherapist, your program and classes aim to treat your specific concerns. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun! While we focus on breath, balance, and posture, we encourage you— and your muscles and connective tissues!— to have a good time while you work your way towards flexibility and a strong core.

Potential benefits of clinical Pilates compared to studio forms of Pilates include:

A focus on rehabilitation
Personalised programs
Individual attention
The ability to go at your own pace
Focus on injury prevention
Progress monitoring
Condition-specific guidance
clinical pilates with purpose

Frequently Asked Questions

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on improving strength, flexibility, and overall health and wellness. There are two types: reformer Pilates, performed on a reformer machine, and mat/fitness Pilates, performed on a mat on the floor in a way similar to yoga. Pilates instructors and teachers emphasise controlled movement, breath, and pace during their programs, which may also include props like Pilates balls, boxes, and small hand weights to vary the exercises and their potential benefits.
Fitness Pilates and clinical Pilates classes offer different workouts for different purposes. Fitness Pilates focuses more on providing a full-body workout for people looking to improve their fitness, while clinical Pilates is centred around rehabilitation and addressing pain and discomfort. If you have a specific condition that affects your movement, connective tissues, or muscles, the tailored approach of clinical Pilates may benefit you. However, if you’re looking for more generalised Pilates exercises, fitness Pilates may be a fantastic choice!
We offer small group sessions at our Pilates studio. Our warm and friendly environment offers benefits like the community feel, where you can get to know others of all ages before, during, and after your workout!
While our non-clinical Pilates classes are available to join without a physio assessment, clinical Pilates requires an assessment due to its focus on rehabilitation. Clinical Pilates is highly personalised and tailored to your unique body and health needs, so we take the time to get to know your body and history before beginning classes. Essentially, each clinical Pilates session is centred around you!

Our Pilates studio is located at 149 Plenty Road, Preston, approximately 15km north of Melbourne.
