G’day Preston neighbours,
As one of the physios at Specific Physiotherapy Preston (149 Plenty Road), I love watching our suburb light up for events like the Lunar New Year Festival. This Sunday, 8 February 2026, Preston Market (30 The Centreway) is hosting a free, family-friendly day from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Expect the CMS Lion Dance starting near Preston Train Station, weaving through High Street for shop blessings, plus fan decorating, face-changing acts, magicians, singers, dancers, and more cultural fun. It’s classic Preston—families with kids, aunties catching up, everyone walking stalls, carrying bags of fresh produce or treats, and holding little ones up for a better view.

But after big community days like this, we see a spike in the clinic: lower back strain from prolonged standing and leaning to watch performances, foot/calf fatigue on concrete floors, shoulder/neck tension from carrying bags or phones, and hip tightness from chasing kids or uneven weight. We know Preston life—market runs, High Street walks, multicultural celebrations—so we don’t want a niggle stopping you from joining in.
Here are some simple, safe Preston physio tips to prep, move smart, and recover. These build on our earlier posts like Avoid Back Pain from Preston Market Shopping.
Quick Prep Before Heading Out (5 minutes at home or car park)
- Hip Flexor Lunge Stretch – Step one foot forward into a lunge (keep front knee over ankle), back straight, gently push hips forward. Hold 20–30 seconds per side. Great for countering forward-leaning postures. (If knees are an issue, make the step shorter or do it seated.)
- Cat-Camel Mobilisation – On all fours, slowly arch and round your back 8–10 times. Loosens the spine for standing tolerance.
- Calf Stretch – Hands on a wall, one foot back, heel down. Hold 20–30 seconds per side—preps calves for market floors.
- Core Bracing – Stand tall, gently draw belly button toward spine (like bracing lightly). Hold 5–10 seconds, repeat 8 times. Supports your back when carrying shopping or kids.

During the Festival: Smart Habits
- Every 20–30 minutes: Quick posture reset—shift weight side-to-side, roll shoulders back, chin tuck (pull chin straight back). Reduces neck/upper back strain from looking up at lion dances or performers.
- Carry smart—use both shoulders or a backpack; alternate sides if holding a child, brace core to avoid one-sided overload.
- Micro-breaks—find a bench near the market or High Street for 2–3 minutes of seated calf pumps (point/flex feet) to ease foot fatigue and boost circulation.
- Hydrate & snack—Preston Market delis and stalls have you covered. Staying hydrated helps prevent cramps in our warm weather.

Recovery Moves for Sunday Evening or Monday
- Knees-to-Chest Stretch – Lie on your back, hug both knees in gently, hold 20–30 seconds. Releases lower back tension from standing.
- Calf Roll – Use a foam roller or rolled towel, slowly roll from ankle to knee (1–2 minutes per leg).
- Shoulder Blade Squeeze – Sit or stand, squeeze blades together for 5 seconds, release. Repeat 10 times to counter forward posture from carrying/phones.

Always stop if you feel pain beyond a mild stretch. If you have existing back/knee issues, pregnancy, or other conditions, modify or skip and chat with us first.
If soreness lingers beyond 48 hours, feels sharp, or includes pins-and-needles/numbness, come see us—we’re locals too and can sort it with a proper hands-on assessment (perhaps dry needling or targeted manual therapy if needed).
Preston’s events like Lunar New Year make our suburb feel like home—don’t miss out because of a tweak. Have a cracking day with family and friends!
